“Warm enough for ya?” Casey asked, jogging to a halt beside the lake.

Talbot looked up from the book he was reading. His fishing rod stood nearby, mounted on a fancy carbon fiber stand. He peered at Casey, and she was pleased to see his eyes lingered on her legs and boobs. She was dressed provocatively, in a halter top that was a size too small over her sports bra, plus a thong instead of shorts or joggers.

“You look like you’re auditioning for a porn video, young lady,” he remarked. “The old-fashioned kind, where the pool boy turns up with a very long pole.”

She giggled at that and hunkered down next to him.

“I guess I am,” she admitted. “Because of what happened last night. I saw you looking in at me and the bulls.”

Talbot nodded, showing no sign of embarrassment. His eyes were locked on hers, and she wondered what he saw. A ditz with big tits? A slut? A misguided young woman trying to recruit an impotent old man into an orgy? Or just another human being, a unique individual?

“You certainly gave me quite a little show,” he admitted. “And a lot to think about.”

He paused, looking out over the lake where tiny birds were swooping at amazing speed. Casey knew they were simply catching insects, but the display seemed like a joyful exhibition of aerobatics. She said something about it, and Talbot nodded.

“Nature is pretty damn impressive. And we’re a part of it, I guess. We just act like we’re not. Like our instincts and needs are more sophisticated. But, in the end, we have to eat and excrete and sleep and so forth. We can’t escape our animality.”

“And we need to fuck, Talbot,” she insisted, putting her hand on his arm.

She felt muscles twitch under the sleeve of the plaid shirt, as if he was stopping himself from flinching away by act of will. For the first time, she wondered if he found her repellent, actually disgusting, or at least unattractive. It was a hard thought to face, but it was possible. Yet her instincts weren’t telling her that.

“I just thought some company might be good for us all,” she said quietly. “And if all you want is company, just being with someone, that’s fine.”

Talbot smiled up at her. “First time a woman has touched me in a kindly way for a while,” he said finally, patting her hand. “And there’s a reason for that. Well, a few reasons. Let’s just see how it goes, Casey. I might well feel the need for company sometime. Maybe sooner rather than later.”

He stopped, looked up, and she followed his gaze. A white line was being etched across the cloudless sky. One airplane was flying. She wondered aloud who was on board and where it was heading.

“Probably tourists coming home after being stranded somewhere,” he remarked. “I wouldn’t want to be on that flight.”

They chatted some more about the world that had existed before the crisis. Casey realized that she was providing just the human contact the old guy craved and felt oddly comforted.
